My guess would be a rabid cat. These animals don't attack if they are healthy unless they are provoked. If rabies is the case, the death it suffered at the hands of the officers was much less painful than the one it would have suffered from the virus. Make sure all of your pets are vaccinated.

We saw that on the news last night!
Pretty crazy...although I don't agree with them killing it. But I wasn't there so I guess I shouldn't judge.
Brandy - I'd question killing the animal as well, but like you said...
I'm sure this type of thing will continue to happen as their habitat recedes to the ever expanding subdivisions.
