In the clear

Well the antibiotics are done and life can now resume as usual. Tonsillitis no more!

I celebrated with a 10 mile hike this weekend, where I strained a ligament in my knee… then went to dance class for three hours. That made for a sore few days, but I’m back up and at ‘em now. Hit the gym yesterday for the first time in two weeks, and then followed it up with a jog in the afternoon, because the weather in Prescott this week is AWESOME! Now I’m finally feeling human again. :)

Thank goodness some things don’t change

After around 500 miles my hiking boots have finally had enough. Both achilles guards came unstitched, one toe guard was coming unglued, multiple seams in the uppers that were pulling apart, one had a wear spot that went almost all the way through the sole, both insoles were worn down to paper thin. In general – they’ve seen some use. But still they hiked just fine mile after muddy, snowy mile. Still waterproof, still darn sturdy shoes.

Until last week anyway, when both shoe laces decided to go within a day of each other. That was the last straw for me. It was time to find some new boots, which for me is always a bit of a trial. Because I fall in love with my shoes. These things have treated me so well, and all I really want is another pair of them. But shoe manufactures push out new lines every year or two and so I generally have to go through the rigmarole of trying on a billion different pairs, walking around the store, going home, researching the ones I liked, going back, trying them on again, and eventually purchasing.

With this in mind I went to my favorite local outfitter, and headed towards the footwear section, my head hung low in resignation. But wait! There! Right on the wall, my shoes! Same make, same model! They still make them! Thank all that is holy, I will now have the fastest shoe purchasing event of my life. Five minutes and two hundred dollars later, I am a happy hiker.

Took them out for a break-in hike last night of 5 1/2 miles after work. It was like hiking with an old friend. I couldn’t be happier.

So in the meantime

I actually went to a doctor!

I would love to say that this weekend found me running around, hiking, driving, taking photos, and all that good stuff. But the honest truth is I spent most of it in bed, wonky from pain pills.

Last week I was feeling pretty tired, but figured it was simply recovery from too much fun in vegas. Thursday morning I woke up to something entirely different. Fever, nausea, and a ridiculously sore left tonsil. A small flashlight and a mirror showed me that something was wrong with my throat, it was bleeding. And this freaked me out enough to go to a doctor. This is the first time I have gone to see a doc due to illness in about five years.

Turns out I had acute tonsillitis, which was probably the cause of my lack of energy all last week. The infection was most likely agitated by the sinus infection that has been with me for the past month to boot. He prescribed me some Percocet and an antibiotic. The Percocet made me hilariously loopy, so I stopped taking them on saturday, but I’ll continue on the antibiotics until they run out. The swelling has started going down, and the bleeding has stopped so it looks like all is headed in the right direction.

I’m taking a week off of the gym and trying hard to take it easy this week, so posting might be light as well. Hopefully I’ll be up and at ‘em next week! :)

Surviving Vegas

I’m not sure how, but I managed to come out of the bachelor party weekend alive. Spent about sixteen hours in a state of heavy inebriation, got shoulder-checked in the throat by a friend, had an amazing meal, got lost in numerous casinos, stumbled around vegas on a nice eight mile walk at one in the morning, failed at getting into the stratosphere tower, went to an entirely too-crowded strip club, got a whopping two hours of sleep, got a free limo ride, laughed a lot, and just generally had a pretty darn good time.

I took a few disposable cameras with me, which I will get developed in the next few days, and probably post a picture of two.
