A black and white lunch

Today I had a mission in mind when I went on my lunch hour walk. I wanted to take shots that would be interesting in black and white. Not something that I am generally thinking about when taking my photos.

Overall it was a successful venture, with some decent graffiti shots:

A snap of the brick showing through on the side of the St. Michael Hotel:

An older man working up on the roof of one of the Whiskey Row buildings. Laying down some tar by the looks of it:

And I even managed to squeak out a black and white HDR out back of the Palace Bar building, showing off the upstairs seating area:

Of course, it was not a total success. I did grab a pic of an odd tree. Its leaves are turning from green straight to white. Not something I have seen before:

And this graffiti under Gurley Street was too colorful for me to put it in BW:

Love the messages on that last graffiti shot. Word.

Funny, I'm taking part in a new photography blog started by my friend Krysta and my assignment for this week is black and white. I have to turn something in by Sunday.

Hey, those really worked in b&w!I wouldn't have thought of graffiti that way.

Melissa - It's weird. Normally whenever I make BW shots it is when I don't like the color versions. So going out and looking specifically for those contrasty shots was a bit of a shift.

I'd be interested in seeing what you come up with for the photo blog (linky goodness?)

GrannyJ - Normally I wouldn't either. Graffiti is so full of color that it seemed kind of odd to shoot it for BW, but like you said; it worked. :)

Tombo! You've been busy since I last visited here! The graffiti shots are amazing.
The tree is some kind of poplar, I believe..or is it cottonwood? It always looks that way..pretty sure it's poplar. If you have one, look out..it sends many shoots up from the roots.
Loved all the food, but my fave is the campfire steak. I'm no longer up to camping, but the memories linger on, and I could hear the wind through the pines, enjoy the friendly smell of your cook fire and allllmooost taste that steak! Thanks for taking me along:)
Waiting for a shot of your new beard!

SOLB - busy is the name of my game. :) So little time.... so many things to do. :)

Thanks for the info on the tree.... I will have to do some investigative work. :) Glad we could take you long with us on our camping trip. :)

The beard shots will probably be happening weekly just to keep everybody updated. :P

I do the same - make stuff b/w that didn't come out how I wanted in color. Or in the case of that picture of me and Diva, masking my big red orb due to the flash. :P

My picture will be more emotional than artistic. I'll send you the link to the photo blog, but don't want to post about it cause it's more personal.
