Hmmmmm..... I don't know about that. The big fire (to my knowledge) happened in the year 1900. Arizona didn't become a state (and thereby plant a statehood tree) until 1912. So unless we be talking bout a different fire, I'm thinking the tell you heard was mis-informed.
I'd be interested if anybody has any info on it though?

Did you know that the original statehood tree burned in the BIG fire and they had to replace it with this one? (so I heard tell anyway)
